Long lines of tired people in worn work clothes stretched from a counter in the back of the room to the entry doors.  The first of the month had provided cash to pay off their “pay-day” loans.  The short-term loans were made at the highest rates to some of our hardest working people, people concerned enough to take the loans rather than let their creditors go a week without payment.
